How Do We Decide When to Call a  Snow Day?

Dear Friends and Families:

It's winter and this year it appears we may have more snow than winters in previous years.  As a parent myself, I know you worry about the safety of your children on our buses.  I thought you would like to know what our district does to keep students safe.

Mr. Curley, the transportation director, and I are vigilent about winter conditions.  First of all, he trains bus drivers every year about how to drive under adverse conditions.  However, when snow is in the forecost, we have a tireless routine.  Not only do we monitor the weather through forecasts, doppler radar, and various other weather instruments, but Mr. Curley gets out on the roads beginning at 3:00 in the morning to observe road conditions at critical points district-wide.  At the same time, I'm looking at weather conditions and monitoring district closuers in North Idaho.

Once Mr. Curley has reviewed conditions on the roads, he calls the road departments to discuss when the snow plows will be able to clean the roads and how long that will take.  He then calls me, usually by 4:45 a.m. at the latest, and makes a recommendation for whether or not the buses can transport our students safely.  it is then my decision whether school should be delayed or called off.  If buses cannot transport students safely, the district then sends out a call to you.  We know we need to get the word out to our community and staff early early because so many of our teachers come from Spokane, Coeur d'Alene, St. Maries, and Moscow.  Their safety is also our concern.

Although winter weather is beautiful, we know it can be treacherous.  Just know we do everything we can to get your children to school and home safely in bad weather.

Please call with any questions you may have.

Sincerely,

Judi Sharrett, Superintendent
